Your Energy Is Your Currency

A few months ago, my friend Wanda, the founder of the Black Women Travel Podcast, said something interesting to me, “We can mirror a successful person and take the exact actions that they take, but that doesn't mean that we're going to get the same results that they get.”

I've been thinking about this lately, because I spent the first 28 years of my life doing what I was told would make me successful and it didn’t work for me.

I went to university, got a finance degree, got an MBA, studied entrepreneurship, wrote the 30 page business plan, got an A in the business planning class, got a board of directors and my business still failed.

In fact, I was a mess from running that business. I was stressed and had daily panic attacks.

When the business failed, I tried to get an investment banking job with all my qualifications and still couldn’t get a foot in the door.

When I decided to follow my passion and be a writer (ironically the failed business was a writing and spoken word business), I was told that it would be easier to get a publishing deal if I was a successful blogger.

So I did what all smart people do - I followed all the successful bloggers who wrote about being a successful blogger and copied all they told me to do.

I read tons of blog posts, I did exactly what the top bloggers said I should do - I studied Search Engine Optimization, signed up for blogging courses, learned how to write the right eye catching headlines, but I still couldn’t get the same results.

I’d talk about the same things they did, I even tried to write the same way they wrote and it just didn’t work.

I couldn’t grow my blog traffic beyond a certain point. I was stuck.

I felt cursed!

It took me a while to realize that people respond to our energy not our actions.

Whatever we're putting out there isn't about what's going on at the surface level; it's about what's going on at soul level, what we believe about ourselves and what we believe about our work.

There’s no such thing as the right action, it’s about taking action that’s in alignment with your soul

After failing dismally as a blogger (the first time), I finally gave up and decided to listen to my soul - I wrote a book.

The book that my soul really wanted to write.

I figured, since nothing was working, I had nothing to lose.

I decided to risk listening to that little voice in my head and started writing a book about the things I’d learned about money, the things that had shifted my relationship with money.

I remember thinking to myself, “I can't get people to read a 600 word blog post and and I want people to read 42,000 words?”

But I just continued and trusted what I was being guided to do.

I had no intentions of publishing the book because I’d heard all the horror stories of trying to get a publisher as a regular person with no social media presence.

I just figured I’d send the book to some friends and that would be that.

But my sister wouldn’t have any of it, she just kept telling me how amazing the book was and to get it published.

After typing the last full stop in the book, I shut down my laptop, started crying and said a simple prayer, “Universe, if this book is meant to be published and read by people, make it happen, because I won’t be looking for an agent or publisher. A publisher has to find me.”

And I left it at that.

Literally, 5 mins after my prayer, my phone rang; it was the South African Depression and Anxiety Group, they needed me to go on TV and talk about depression and my history of depression in 2 days.

On one of the TV shows, the presenter asked me what I was up to and I mentioned that I’d just finished writing a book; it just so happens that on that day, a publisher was watching the TV show.

And as they say - the rest is history.

My book was published and in stores, 4 months later.

It was that book (Heart, Mind & Money) that truly launched my career as a blogger and entrepreneur.

I sometimes laugh when I realize that my journey was different - I got a publishing deal by just writing the book.

Becoming a writer was as easy as sitting down and writing the book.

When we ignore that small voice within, we make things harder than they need to be for ourselves

The challenge is to trust that small voice within and to trust that our souls know best.

But we look around and see what works for others and what others are doing, and if it doesn’t match what our inner voice is telling us, we dismiss it.

We have been conditioned to doubt ourselves.

I doubted I’d get a publishing deal without a good social media presence, because I’d seen others first build their social media profiles and then use that as leverage for a publishing deal.

All of us have different paths.

My path required me to listen to that inner voice, do the inner work and then follow the guidance my soul was giving.

Listening to my soul is what allows me to keep traveling and growing Wealthy Money.

I don’t even have a set travel plan; this is why I arrived in Vietnam in May with the intention of staying one week, only to end up staying a month and in that month I was able to plan the 2020 Wealthy Money Vietnamese Retreat.

It’s why I’m still in Thailand after 6 weeks (I thought I was going to be here for 1 week) and why in these 6 weeks I’ve come up with the September 2019, Wealthy Money Retreat in Chiang Mai and gone deeper into womb healing.

Following our soul nudges helps us get into alignment and is what elevates our energy.

Your energy is your universal currency.

When we talk about energy it's not just about feeling happy or grateful, it's about understanding what's going on at a deeper level, a soul level.

It’s about doing the inner work, because trust me you can take whatever actions, but if the action isn't in alignment with your soul, it will show eventually.
