The Fear of Rejection, Weaponizing Love and How all that Affects Our Savings and Income

The Fear of Rejection, Weaponizing Love and How all that Affects Our Savings and Income

Every family has a money norm -  a money story that has become acceptable to everyone in the family and is now keeping them financially stuck.

The family members that deviate from this norm are often othered or out right rejected.

Being rejected can feel like death, because in the stone age, being rejected from the tribe often meant you had to fight the elements alone and that often led to death so the reptilian brain (which has not evolved much) registers rejection as death.

It's very human to seek connection and acceptance because we associate that with survival and staying alive, so being rejected or witnessing someone being rejected is very traumatic.

Being rejected and othered isn’t always messy or ugly

Rejection can be subtle - it can also be the family treating the family members with money differently.

So they feel like they are different - they talk to them in English (if it's not their native tongue), serve them from the good plates and glasses, act up for them so they feel like guests instead of family...

Being made to feel like the other is a rejection.

It makes them feel and know that they are different from the rest of the family because they have money.

So they have one option  - to buy their way into the tribe with money and make themselves useful to the family by making themselves financially indispensable, which has it's own drama in terms of #blacktax.

Most of us grew up watching this dynamic and we learned that to stay in the tribe, be accepted and avoid rejection we had to be LIKE the tribe and that meant emulating the tribe's financial behavior.

This fear of rejection plays out in our bank accounts and finances as:

  • Not being able to go beyond a certain amount of money in our bank accounts - we find ourselves mirroring our families in their spending and savings habits

  • Not being able to go beyond a certain income level; usually not being able to out earn the tribe

  • Not being able to invest in a way that creates generational wealth
