My Thoughts on Girlfriend Allowance
Every so often on social media the topic of girlfriend allowance comes up and I want to chip in on this.
I’ve had a girlfriend allowance. In fact I have at one point in my life held onto a man's bank cards and credit cards and had access to all his bankers in case I needed something, if he was out of town.
And all my feminism aside, I will honestly admit I like that life.
In fact I don't just like it, I want it and prefer it - because it's nice.
I like being pampered and taken care of with money.
I like someone just surprising me with weekend getaways and flight tickets and clothes. It's just nice and I miss it.
I love relationshipping with someone who is concerned about where I sleep, where I eat and what it takes to take care of my body.
In fact there was a time when a man wanted to pay off all my debts and I said no, because I was scared US$60,000 (R700k at the time) was too much to have a person pay to settle my debt and I wanted to do it myself.
So I took 4 years to pay off the debt myself (vs 5 mins) and I am happy I did it myself because there would be no Wealthy Money today and the last few years of being single and building this company have helped me find my power. .
(I have a whole lot of insights I will one day share from this refusal of debt being paid off. If this offer was made to me today and I was in debt, I would take it.)
But in reality - having had a girlfriend allowance, it's been hard to go back to 50/50. Also it's never 50/50 cos we never count the emotional and invisible labor of women in relationships.
Also let's not forget pregnancy - that takes a toll on your body and no matter how involved a man is, it's not his body carrying the baby.
So yeah, I can do 50/50 in relationships (because I make my own money) but I don't really want to.
Anyway, my point is if I had to choose between 2 relationships (and all things were equal or almost equal) and the only difference in the relationships was having girlfriend allowance and not having girlfriend allowance, I choose girlfriend allowance every time.
You know how many more massages and acupuncture sessions I have to do when I am relationshipping with a person cos relationships bring up ish?
That stuff costs money.
So yes to hella girlfriend allowance please.
